Climate and Weather
South Africa is located at the southernmost tip of the African continent and is the subtropical zone. Compared to other regions at that latitude, however, temperatures in many areas of South Africa are lower than other subtropical areas. The climatic conditions in South Africa are largely dependent on the altitude of the area in question and its proximity to one of the oceans. For your travel planning, keep in mind that the seasons in the southern hemisphere stand in direct opposition to those of the northern hemisphere:
- Spring: September, October, November
- Summer: December, January, February
- Fall: March, April May
- Winter: June, July, August
During the summer months, travelers can expect hot sunny weather with temperature ranging from 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures in the winter drop to the freezing point. Precipitation is most likely in the summer months, with the exception of the Western Cape which is a winter-rain area.
