Galapagos Islands Facts

• Currency
  The U.S. dollar has been adopted as the official currency of Ecuador and is accepted everywhere. It’s a good idea to bring a fair amount of cash with you in US dollars, using smaller denominations ranging from $1s to $20s. Due to recent counterfeiting, Ecuadorian banks are not accepting $100 bills. It is up to you to determine your comfort level between carrying cash and travelers’ checks. American Express, Visa, and Citicorp are the most widely recognized traveler’s checks. We also suggest a range of denominations, so you do not need to cash a large travelers’ check when you only need a few dollars.
• Banks, Credit Cards, ATMs
  Major credit cards including American Express, MasterCard, and Visa are widely accepted at restaurants, hotels, and shops in tourist areas. Some merchants may add on a surcharge of 6% to 10%. Using cash not only means saving this cost but sometimes avoiding taxes. We suggest you plan on bringing a credit card for any shopping, unforeseen expenses, or emergencies. Banking hours are typically from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. ATM machines are located throughout major cities, and our guides will help you if you need assistance.
• Languages Spoken
  The official language of Ecuador is Spanish, however English is widely spoken at hotels, restaurants, and shops. If you plan to set out on your own — or simply for convenience — it is good to carry an English/Spanish phrase book as knowledge of at least a few words and phrases is always appreciated by the locals.
• Time
  Mainland Ecuador is 5 hours behind GMT. It shares the Eastern Standard Time Zone with the U.S. for most of the year, though Ecuador does not observe daylight savings time. The Galapagos Islands are one hour behind the mainland or 6 hours behind GMT.
