Iceland is a European island country in the North Atlantic Ocean with a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 39,769 sq mi. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík, with the surrounding areas in the southwestern region of the country being home to two-thirds of the national population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active as was clearly demonstrated in 2010 when a smoldering volcano disrupted air travel for weeks. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterised by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle.
A honeymoon in Iceland requires at least a visit to a geothermal spa as Iceland is richer in hot springs and high-temperature activity than any other country in the world. With over 250 geothermal areas producing over 800 hot springs, these natural wonders are one of the country's most famous tourist attractions. In fact Geysir, from which the word "geyser" is derived, is the most famous of Iceland's geysers.
What else is there to do on an Iceland honeymoon? Snæfellsjökull National Park on the Snæfellsnes peninsula is a perfect location for nature lovers with amazing birdlife, lush valleys and lava fields. The glacier is believed to be one of Earth’s seven major energy centres and was the backdrop to the Jules Verne novel, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Snæfellsnes is great for horseback riding, boat tours and walks along the beach.
