Geography/Environment
Canada's largest province covers an area of 643,819 square miles. It is twice the size of Texas and seven times the size of the United Kingdom. Quebec's immense territory stretches for nearly 1,250 miles from north to south, and 930 miles from east to west. It extends from the fertile St. Lawrence Lowlands bordering four U.S. states (New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine), to Baffin Island and the northern boreal seas. Its vast expanse of boreal forest, taiga and tundra is scattered with a million lakes and rivers, comprising a fresh water network of 69,500 sq. miles.

Climate and Weather
Quebec has three distinct climates: the humid continental climate in the region covered by boreal forest (south of the 50th parallel), the subarctic climate in the taiga region (between the 50th-58th parallels), and the arctic climate of Nunavik, the tundra region above the 58th parallel, home of the Inuit. Quebec's southernmost climate is marked by seasonal extremes of temperature. A rigorous snowy winter, with an average annual snowfall of over 3 meters (10 feet), gives way to an exhilarating spring and a hot summer, extinguished by a crisp and flamboyant autumn.

Driving in Quebec
  • Most foreign licenses are valid in Quebec. The speed limit on autoroutes is 100 km/h (60 mph), and drivers and all passengers must wear seat belts.
  • The possession or use of a radar detector is prohibited, whether it is connected or not. Police officers may confiscate such devices and fine their owners from $500 to $1000 if they find one in a vehicle.
  • Turning right on a red light is prohibited in Quebec. Failure to comply could result in a $100- to $200-fine.

Destination Wedding Information
The following are needed in order to get married in Quebec:
  • An original birth certificate or a current passport
  • Photo identification such as a driver's license or a health card
  • If you've been married before in a locale other than Canada, you must receive authorization from the Minister of Consumer and commercial Relations prior to applying for your marriage license
  • A certificate of divorce or a certified true copy of the decree absolute of divorce. If you are widowed, a death certificate for your deceased spouse is necessary.
  • If you are under 18, you must obtain parental consent before getting married.
  • Fees $110 Canadian. The Municipal Office will accept cash, credit and debit cards.
A marriage license is valid for three months.
