Highlights
San Diego is more a chain of separate communities than a cohesive city, so many of the major attractions are some distance apart. Downtown San Diego is one of the city's prime draws, home to the Gaslamp Quarter Historic District, Horton Plaza, elegant hotels, and trendy restaurants. San Diego's Spanish and Mexican heritage are most evident in Old Town, north of downtown at Juan Street, near the intersection of Interstates 5 and 8. Overlooking downtown, 1,200-acre Balboa Park has most of San Diego's museums and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Coronado is accessible via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge or by ferry; its wide, friendly streets are easy to navigate without a car. The village of La Jolla can be reached by I-5; its verdant hillsides are covered with homes worth millions.
Geography/Environment
San Diego is a coastal city in the southwestern corner of California, close to the border with Mexico. San Diego spreads over some 300 square miles (514.0 km2). Most of the popular San Diego attractions are clustered along a five mile wide strip near the ocean.
Activities

Climate and Weather
San Diego has an all-but-perfect climate, so weather-wise any time is a good time to visit. If you want to indulge in watersports and bake yourself on the beach,it's best to come between May and October, when average daily highs range from 70 to 85ºF (22 to 30ºC). Even in the coolest months (December and January), daily high temperatures still hover pleasantly close to 68ºF (20ºC). Surfing is always good, but the best conditions are from September to November, with strong swells and offshore Santa Ana winds. Gray whales head south past Point Loma from mid-December to late February and return on their way north in March.
