Savannah is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia, established in 1733, and lies on the Savannah River approximately 20 mi upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. Savannah was a strategically important port city in the American Revolution and the American Civil War is still today an important Atlantic seaport. It is Georgia's fifth-largest city and third-largest metropolitan area. Savannah's downtown area includes the Savannah Historic District, the Savannah Victorian Historic District and 22 park-like squares and is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States.
