Puerto Vallarta

My absolute favorite part of Mexico! It sits at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountains with the white stucco buildings and red clay tile roofs dotting the mountainside everywhere. The hotels are on the beach surrounding Banderas Bay, noted for the whales who visit from December to April. For the ecological minded, there is a program for releasing the baby turtles back into the ocean after the hatching.

Puerto Vallarta is an artist's haven with some of the best restaurants you will find in Mexico. There is an "old Mexico" feel to the downtown with cobble stone streets lining the Malecon or walkway which borders the seawall dotted with sculptures done by famous artists. There is a band stand downtown near the square where there is usually some local entertainment on the weekends. This is also where local artists display their wares. There are not as many all inclusive hotels in Puerto Vallarta, but most hotels will offer a meal plan.

The Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya is located south of Puerto Vallarta and is an all inclusive. It has recently been totally remodeled and they have done a very good job converting them from condo type rooms to very large hotel rooms with sitting areas. All rooms have a balcony facing the pools and beach. The food was good when I stayed there recently and there was a wide variety.

The hotel closest to the main part of town is the Sheraton. I also stayed there for a recent conference. I was on the club level and it was extremely nice with continental breakfast and wine and snacks at night (I also had a butler).

We toured the Presidente Intercontinental and I was most impressed. The hotel has 100 rooms and would be prefect for a destination wedding. As a matter of fact, I spoke with the mother of the bride who had married there the night before and she told me it was absolutely perfect in every way.

We were guests of Vallarta Palace for dinner and entertainment on our last night at the conference. This hotel has one of the prettiest gazebos I have ever seen at a hotel. It is made out of gray marble, has an altar, and seats for 30 inside. The rooms are very spacious and it is all inclusive. It is located north of the airport in the area called Nuevo Vallarta. I have also toured the Riu hotels in Nayarit, the Four Seasons in Punta Mita and I have stayed at the Villa del Palmar Flamingos in Nayarit. All are beautiful properties, but about 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta.
