Tortuguere is located in the northeast corner of Costa Rica on a strip of land surrounded by water. On one side you have the Carribean ocean and a river canal on the other side. The drive to Tortuguere is an adventure, with dirt roads, winding through the hillsides, giving you wonderful views across lush green valleys and mountain sides. The final leg is a boat ride down the canal. Keep an eye out for wild life - crocodiles, birds and monkeys. There is also an airport for those in a hurry, or ideally you can take the boat in and fly out to your next destination.

Tortuguere means Turtle Place. It is a birthing place for the turtles to come lay their eggs. There are tours for night walks to watch this amazing wonder of nature take place. The turtle lay eggs during the summer months. July and August are best for seeing the turtles hatch and venture into the sea.

There is a National Park with daily tours by boat that take you through the maze of water ways to view the wildlife. The tour guides, being nature lovers, are full of amazing facts and knowledge of all the species living in the wild. You will feel like you are on a Disney Jungle Cruise, but you are in the real jungle with the best of wildlife all around you. Take a leisure trip into the town of Tortuguere, it's one small strip of shops and houses mixed in with each other.

There is a canopy tour with 11 ziplines, 4 suspension bridges, a scaling wall, and a Tarzan swing. There are trails for nature walks to view more of the flora and fauna. You can take fishing tours where the fresh water and salt water from the Caribbean mix together, with the most popular catch of the day being Snapper, Tarpon, and Snook.

The resorts in the area are lodge style, giving you that jungle feel. They are small and cater to your needs. Tortuguere - a wonderful place to get into nature and come back to your lodge for a relaxing stay.
