Honeymoon in Buenos Aires

by Debra Rubio last updated on 07/25/2008 Disclaimer

Today, one of the hottest honeymoon spots in the world is Buenos Aires. At one-third the cost of a European vacation you can enjoy the continental flair in a warm atmosphere. It is clean, safe and the people are extremely nice. This is not your typical Latin American destination as it is much more refined with plenty of great food, entertainment and culture. There is no jet lag because the time zones are similar to the US. Just remember the seasons are opposite, our summer is their winter.

Though they have all categories of hotels -- from the Four Seasons to 1-star -- my personal favorite is the Park Tower, a Starwood Hotel, located in the heart of the city in the Plaza San Martin with a beautiful park across the street. The rooms are elegant with Italian marble baths that feature a separate walk-in shower. Service is a strong point offering butlers for their suite clients. The concierge there can arrange any activity you may want to do. Great restaurants and shops are within walking distance.

You can take a taxi ride (about five dollars) to the Recoleta neighborhood a couple of miles away. Considered one of the finest and most expensive areas of the city, it boasts French style buildings, large green spaces and first class restaurants. A visit to the Recoleta cemetery and the mausoleum of Eva Duarte de Peron (known worldwide as Evita) is a must.

Tango was born in the San Telmo area a century ago. Be sure to go to Señor Tango for dinner and the best tango show in town. Visit the barrio of La Boca which retains a strong European flavor as many of its early settlers came from the Italian city of Genoa. A walk through El Caminito, La Boca’s pedestrian street and its colorful houses will reward you with the performance of tango artists while you check out the art for sale by local artists. Other attractions include La Ribera theatre, Italian taverns, and La Bombonera (home of the world famous soccer team Boca Juniors).

There are many other attractions offered by this cosmopolitan city. Taste the best tapas in Palermo after a visit to the zoo or botanical gardens. In Puerto Madero make a dinner reservation for 10:00 PM at Asia de Cuba on Friday or Saturday night and watch as the restaurant is transformed into a vibrant nightclub. About forty minutes north of the city you can take a boat ride on the scenic El Tigre.

If you are looking for great food, entertainment, and lots of fun, Buenos Aires is for you.
